Synopsis

In this work Professor Kann describes, surveys, and discusses the major historical aspects of the Habsburg empire - diplomatic, political, institutional, socioeconomic, and cultural.

He places as much emphasis on the history and problems of the eleven major national groups that constituted the empire as on its over-all history. He views national issues with reference both to the major historical political units (such as the hereditary lands and the lands of the Bohemian and Hungarian crowns) and to the ethnic units that were not politically organized.

Professor Kann thus approaches problems from the standpoint of the imperial center on issues of foreign and domestic policies as well as form that of the historic and ethnic entities he pays particular attention to the evolution of the intellectual history of all national groups in the empire. And he discusses the often posed questions of the consequences of the dissolution of the Habsburg empire for European and world history in terms of its contribution to the evolution of seminal ideas since World War I.

The volume includes an extensive bibliographical essay on the literature in several languages as well as statistical charts and maps.
