Synopsis

(From The Preface):

This is a book for those who really love skiing. It is not just for those who are already expert skiers- "expert" is a pretty vague term anyway - and nor is it for just anyone who skis. It is NOT meant for those who enjoy only those things which surround the sport, all of those fashionable social diversions which go along with (and go on after) skiing, but which are really no part of it.

It is not meant for "hot dog" skiers; it is not for racers, not for instructors. It is not for the ski-shop freak - the affluent guy so fascinated with the new developments in ski equipment that he will spend any amount of money on a gadget which promises to help him ski better. It is not for the cerebral skier - the guy who spends countless hours talking about how to do it, but rarely, if ever, actually goes out and does it. It is not for the technician - the skier (or instructor) who gets so bogged down in discussions of the physics or the "biomechanics" involved in turning a pair of skis that he never really gives himself a chance to feel what it is like to carve rather than slide down the backside of an icy mogul.

This book is for SKIERS - for people who want to do, to watch, to sense, and most important, to appreciate skiing.

Because this book is for people who are interested in skiing on a relatively sophisticated level, it begins where many skiing manuals end: with parallel skiing. We must never minimize the importance of those skiing fundamentals learned so carefully at the beginning and intermediate levels of skiing. This book will frequently make reference to the snowplow and the snowplow turn as positions from which many of the sport's more advanced maneuvers develop. But skiing at these lower levels is more than adequately covered in other sources. In spite of what others may say, and what so many may think, parallel skiers are not yet expert skiers. Everything that comes before it is just preparation. The parallel turn marks the point where skiing really begins.
