Product Details/Synopsis Teach children the joy of reading with this delightful story about a captive gorilla that decides to find a better life for he and one of his friends. Published in 2012, "The One and Only Ivan" tells the story of Ivan, an adult silverback gorilla who has spent the last 24 years living in a cage at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. This inspiring and heart-warming children’s book was written by author Katherine Applegate and features beautiful illustrations from Patricia Castelao. "The One and Only Ivan" was the winner of the prestigious Newberry Medal in 2013, recognizing it as the best American children’s book of the year. Within the pages of this entertaining story, young readers experience firsthand the emotional changes Ivan undergoes, as the story is written entirely from his perspective. Although the work is mostly fictional, Katherine Applegate was inspired to write the book based on the true story of a real-life gorilla known as Ivan, who spent more than 27 years living in a small enclosure at the B&I shopping mall in Tacoma, Washington. In "The One and Only Ivan," Applegate creates a fantastic world where children quickly begin to feel real emotion for all of the characters. Along with Ivan, an elephant named Stella and a stray dog called Bob also live at the mall. For his part, Ivan originally believes his life to be quite good, as he can watch TV and eat bananas whenever he wants. He also gets to make artwork, which helps his owner make money whenever the art is sold to mall customers. As well, Ivan doesn’t remember his life before the mall, so he is fairly content with his situation. However, being an elephant, Stella has a much better memory and remembers all about her life before the mall, especially her time being trained at a circus. Instead of being forced to do tricks for the mall owner, Stella would prefer to be in a zoo, as there she’d have more space. Eventually, the owner buys a baby elephant Ruby, and Stella begins to try to teach her tricks, but soon succumbs to an illness and dies. However, before she dies, Stella asks Ivan to help take care of Ruby and to try to take her to a better place. Soon after, Ivan begins to remember more about his old life, deciding that he too would prefer to be in a zoo, especially after he sees the mall owner abusing Ruby while trying to teach her tricks. He eventually hatches a plan to use his artwork to show that he and Ruby want to be in a zoo instead of the mall, which eventually succeeds and the two friends are transported to the same zoo facility. At first Ivan doesn’t get along well with the other gorillas and prefers the company of humans, but eventually he learns to love his new situation and takes his place as the silverback leader of his troop. Author Katherine Applegate’s "The One and Only Ivan" may be written about an animal, but the book tells a story of courage and perseverance that kids definitely learn from. More than just be a fun and funny story about an elephant and his friends, this is destined to be a book kids enjoy reading over and over again.
