Synopsis

On Thursday afternoon, March 23, 1944, a group of partisans attacked a column of 156 SS police on the Via Rasella in the center of German-occupied Rome. Immediately upon receiving the news, Hitler ordered that within twenty-four hours ten Italians must be exterminated for each German killed. Himmler demanded the immediate deportation of the entire adult male population of the city. This violent and tragic story - and its political aftermath - has long been argued and versions of it have appeared here and there. It is here in full, both a valuable historical record and a book that reads like a suspense novel. The author examined trial records, captured documents, private papers of people involved, and interviewed everyone from the leaders of the Roman Resistance to the former head of the SS in Rome, and was given the privilege of utilizing documents classified by the Italian government.
